Different geoclimatic zones

There are nine different geoclimatic sections in the Botanical Garden from all continents except Africa:

East Asia, Himalayas, North America, Mexico, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Mediterranean and Transcaucasia.

Botanical Garden of Batumi has three different park areas

The upper park area - entrance from the university

The Batumi Botanical Garden is divided into three parts. The first and special part of the Botanical Garden was bought by the botanist Tatarinov in 1892 to build his summer house. Here he created his private garden with various plants, and all his guests were so enthusiastic that it was not simply called a garden, but the Botanical Garden.

Tatarinov's summer house, built in 1902, is an architectural masterpiece, where the botanical garden is now housed.

The upper part of the park covers about 11 hectares and has 224 different species of plants.

Here are some of them:

Araucaria bidwili - Queensland Araucaria
Phoenix canariensis - Canary date palm
Eucaliptus viminalis - Stick gum
Sequoia sempervirens - Coast redwood
Cryptomeria japonica - Japanese silver fir
Magnolia grandiflora - Evergreen magnolia
Osmanthus fragrans - Sweet-scented osmanthus
Camelia japonica - Japanese Camellia
Trachelospermum jasminoides - Chinese star jasmine

In the upper area there are several plants that protect the soil from erosion.

A special type of bamboo grows here: Phyllostachys pubescens - Moso bamboo.

In 1.5 months it reaches its full size of 30 metres and a diameter of 12 cm. It takes 3 to 4 years for the bamboo to become hard and is often used to make various types of furniture. Soft bamboo branches are used for various utensils. It is interesting to note that this bamboo also grows in Central Europe, where it reaches a maximum height of 20 metres.

The upper part of the park also offers a particularly beautiful view of the sea. There are also two very pretty small gardens, one named after the botanist and co-founder of the garden, Jason Gordesian, and the other dedicated to the Georgian patriarch, Ilia the Second.

The Lower Park - Green Cape Entrance (Main Entrance)

The lower part of the park covers about 10 hectares and was laid out in 1881 by the French landscape gardener Michael D'Alfons, who also named it the Green Cape. He laid out the garden in the French style, using mainly rare plants from France, and called it the 'Little Riviera'. D'Alfons' private house still stands in the park.

The area became part of the Batumi Botanical Garden only in the 1950s.

In the lower area there are 95 different species of trees, especially interesting are the trees planted by D'Alfons, such as:

Magnolia grandiflora - evergreen magnolia
Quercus occidentalis - Western Oak
Araucaria brasiliana - Brazilian araucaria
Paulownia tomentosa – Paulownia
Cordyline australis - Cabbage tree

The Seaside Park

This was originally the main entrance and the area itself was called 'American Boulevard' with many flowers from the USA and other parts of the world. The founder of the Botanic Garden, Andrei Krasnov, intended this area to be the most visited part of the Garden.

In the 1950s the "American Boulevard" was rebuilt and a partially new French-style park was created.

As planned by its founder, Seaside Park is the most visited part of the garden, with camping and picnic areas, as well as cafes and flower shops.

History of the Botanical Garden

Almost until the end of the 19th century, the entire area of the present Batumi Botanical Garden was covered with beech, oak, linden, chestnut, bay, Pontic rhododendron and other plants.

After the Frenchman D'Alfons and the Russian botanist Tatarinov bought part of the area and created private gardens, Professor Krasnov also became aware of the area.

He visited Batumi in 1893 and realised that the climate was ideal for subtropical plants and decided to make it the second home of subtropical plants in the world.

In 1912, the Batumi Botanical Garden with 6 geoclimatic zones was officially opened.

The Georgian botanist Iason Gordesiani played a major role in the establishment and development of the Botanical Garden. He graduated from the Agricultural Institute of Versailles in France and before coming to Batumi he worked at the Royal Garden in London.

From its foundation in 1912 until 2020, the best gardeners and garden architects of the Tsarist Empire, later of the Soviet Union and of Georgia, worked at the Batumi Botanical Garden, and the result of their hard work is clearly visible today.

Since 1998, the garden has been a member of BGCI (Botanic Gardens Conservation International) and cooperates with 140 different countries, universities and scientific institutions.
