General information

Road conditions in Georgia

The road network in Georgia is well developed, but the condition of the roads does not always correspond to Western European standards. Roads in regions outside the capital are gradually being upgraded.

Signs are mostly in Georgian and English, but not always clear. There is cell phone reception in many places, but not everywhere and if the car gets stuck in a remote place, it is not very easy to contact a breakdown service or rental company.

People everywhere in Georgia are very friendly and helpful, but in the regions and small towns most people do not speak English or German and it is not easy to ask for the right directions.

Choose the right car!

There are numerous unpaved roads in Georgia, almost in every region and getting around them when traveling the country is sometimes impossible. Therefore, you should rent a four-wheel drive vehicle in Georgia, unless you only want to tour the cities in Georgia.

What routes should you not drive in Georgia by yourself

In general, all of Georgia is safe, but due to very bad road conditions, it is strongly discouraged to drive the route from Alvani to Omalo, via Abano Pass by yourself. Most car rental companies also clearly state that it is not allowed to drive a rental car to Omalo.

The information about the route to Omalo, as well as the possibility to go there with a local driver, can be found here.

Which stretches of road are in poor condition in Georgia

Numerous roads, mainly in the mountains have not been renovated for decades and look accordingly bad.

1. the road from Batumi to Achalziche, over Goderdzi Pass (2.024m) is under construction, but it will take years until the road is completely finished (as of 2023)

2. the section from Ushguli to Lentechi is also under construction and due to landslide, it is often not possible to drive on the road (gravel road) after the rains

3. the section from Mestia to Ushguli is partly built up to the middle, but because a part of Ushguli belongs to the UNESCO cultural heritage, there are no plans to concrete the road up to the village of Ushguli.

4. the road to Shatili will be closed from the middle of October, until the beginning of May and for those who like off-road driving, this is a good opportunity to let off steam. Depending on where exactly you want to go in the region, you will need a light, or good off-road vehicle. To Shatili, some also drive with a vehicle, without four-wheel drive, but it does not necessarily have to be, because if it rains, you have a problem.

Refueling in Georgia

There are many gas stations in the country and you can pay with your card. However, it is advisable to have cash with you. In the region of Tusheti and Khesvuretia there are no gas stations, in Svanetia there are 2 gas stations and they are only in Mestia.

Defensive driving!

Defensive driving is beneficial to your safety. It doesn't matter if you have a driver or if you are at the wheel of a rental car yourself. Your vacation in Georgia should avoid unpleasant moments altogether if possible. Always drive with foresight and adapt your speed to the conditions.

Haste and haste are completely out of place. Caution and prudence are the trump cards here. Drivers with "Sebastian Vettel" manners should be clearly informed that you prefer a restrained driving style. "Nela-Nela!" means "Slow down, please!"  The word could be very useful, especially if you are not driving yourself in Georgia, but are in a cab.

Public transport in Georgia

The most common means of transportation in Georgia is a so-called Marshutka (Micro-Avtobusi in Georgian), which is a minibus, usually over 15 years old, with about 20 very narrow seats, usually without a seat belt. They are very cheap and you can get by bus, almost anywhere, even faster than you think, or than the traffic signs dictate.

One little thing to watch out for is the lettering on the destinations the marshlutkas go to. They are sometimes written in Georgian, especially within a city. Georgian writing is very beautiful (now part of the intangible world heritage) but difficult to read for a European. (მარშუტკა) this is roughly how the minibus is written in Georgian.

The trains in Georgia

There is a relatively good train service within Georgia, especially towards the Black Sea. You can travel from Tbilisi, on a modern train to Batumi, for about 25 euros. It is 400 kilometers in total and the train ride takes 5 hours. You can also buy tickets online at https://tkt.ge/railway.

You can go from Tbilisi to Yerevan (capital of Armenia) or also to Baku (capital of Azerbaijan). The tickets cost about 30 euros.
